The Mars Helicopter, Ingenuity aims to make the first powered flight on another planet when it takes off on Mars. It has now landed and safely checked in with the rover. It should detach and fly within the first 30-60 days of the mission. I learned a lot getting to visit the drone right before it was mounted on the rover at NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena.
How do you fly in 1% of Earth's atmosphere:
Have large rotors (they are 1.2m in diameter) and spin them very fast, around 2500 RPM (5x the speed of a helicopter on Earth).
Plus the aircraft has to be light:
The Mars helicopter weighs in at 1.8kg or around the same as a laptop. Every piece had to be stripped down for weight. Instead of using aerogel for insulation, the craft makes use of CO2 gaps between components. Even aerogel was too heavy!
One of the major challenges is surviving the Martian night:
Temperatures plunge to -80C to -100C so two thirds of the craft's power is actually used to keep its electronics warm. Only one third is used for flying. The estimated flight time is 90 seconds.
The craft can't be driven remotely, it will have to fly autonomously, using its own sensor suite to determine how to fly. The round trip 20 minute delay with Earth means steering the craft from mission control would be impossible.

It's really only a demonstrator at this stage. Sort of like a stripped down beer can as opposed to say, an Apache. It will have only a limited number of planned missions, mostly testing the autonomous navigation system. Low and slow, to answer your actual question, and not very far, either - the total flight time is 90 seconds for each hop.

Chytrá paní doktorka z rodu Inků je milá. Doufám, že po ni nepožadovali, že za to, že vrtulník vystřelí na Mars, musí zaplnit montážní místnost Ingenuity v JPL zlatem až po svou hlavu. Jinak asi cena projektu vyjádřená zlatými cihlami by postavila pořádnou zeď. Dalo by se to lehce vypočítat.

Why did they do the complex pulley system to offset the weight instead of taking the batteries out and reducing the weight that way? Is there something I am missing? Maybe they want to test the entire system without any hardware modifications I suppose?

This will not be the first powered flight. Technically, the sky cranes that lowered the rivers safety to the ground in the last few rover missions have been the first powered flights on other planets.
John Jay
John Jay 12 timmar sedan
@Publius2k4 Good for you. That takes some determination and courage. I also ended up changing career directions, and it eventually led me to aerospace engineering, but the work I do is much less interesting than working for JPL.
Publius2k4
Publius2k4 13 timmar sedan
@John Jay We could all play that game. I would have loved to study aeronautics and be working for SpaceX right now, but I had to pick a career trajectory at 19, before I was even old enough to buy alcohol. Imagine my horror when I found myself at 30 in a career I hated and student loan debt that I will never be able to pay back completely. So what did I do to remedy this? Back to school for a masters degree and a mid-life career change. And the cycle continues.
John Jay
John Jay 14 timmar sedan
@Publius2k4 I can't really pick a coolest part. Seeing "almost live" video from Mars is pretty cool too. If I had defied my mother's wishes and moved to California, I might have ended up at JPL and be one of the "old men" designing this mission. Oh well.
Publius2k4
Publius2k4 14 timmar sedan
@John Jay Right. Jet engines and rocket engines both require oxygen for combustion. Jets derive the oxygen from the atmosphere, whereas rockets typically bring the oxygen with them.... of course that’s assuming a petroleum based rocket fuel. Other chemical reactions can also be utilized for rocket propulsion. Ion based propulsion in various spacecraft is probably the coolest form of propulsion that I think is currently used. But Perseverance’s battery is the coolest part of this entire mission, in my opinion. It’s nuclear, so there’s no need to worry about solar panels getting covered in dust.
John Jay
John Jay 14 timmar sedan
@Publius2k4 "If the video had claimed that the helicopter was the first controlled aircraft to achieve flight using aerodynamics to create lift, it would have been accurate." And thus my first comment, wherein I said what (I think) they really meant was first powered aircraft. I mean obviously they know about the other landers and the sky crane, so I think it's pretty obvious they mean the first powered flight using an airfoil. Which, by the way is the way they phrased it today at JPL when the helicopter made its first flight. Rockets and turbine jets only use the same fuel in the sense that a form of kerosene can (but don't have to be) used in both. Plenty of rockets use fuel that isn't even derived from the same sources as jet fuel. But that wasn't my point. My point was that rockets don't require an atmosphere, whereas aircraft (and jet engines) do, so the sky crane isn't really an aircraft. This is getting really pedantic. I'm just letting it go. Good catch on the screen names. I had forgotten who Publius was in U.S. history.
